The Gas Safe Register is the recognised industry body for gas safety standards in the UK. In some cases, boilers need to be registered if you want their warranties to stay valid. While a gas safety certificate is only a legal requirement for landlords with tenanted properties, it’s recommended that you have your own copy. The certificate will be needed when/if you decide to sell your property and gives you peace of mind that the boiler was installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Below, you can find more information about how to determine if your new gas boiler has been registered with the Gas Safe Register and how to do this yourself.
Registering a new boiler with the Gas Safe Register is the responsibility of the heating engineer that installed the appliance. They can do this after the appliance has been installed and, when done correctly, you will automatically receive your certificate in the post up to one month after registration. It is your responsibility, however, to ensure the installer notifies Gas Safe, so if you’ve just had a boiler installed, be sure to look out for your certificate in the post.
This means that if you’re questioning whether your boiler has been registered, you should check your home for this certificate. There may be a specific place where you keep such documents, so be sure to check here, as well as any other areas where you might have put the certificate. This could include an office space, a filing cabinet or a kitchen drawer. You may also want to check on top of your boiler.
If you cannot find this document, it doesn’t necessarily mean your boiler isn’t registered. You may have misplaced the certificate or there may have been a system error that meant one wasn’t sent out to you. You should contact the installer or installation company to find out if the boiler was registered, as they will be able to check this for you.
If they believe that it was registered, you can purchase additional certificate copies from the Gas Safe Register for £6. Alternatively, the installer can contact them on your behalf about additional certificates.
Only a Gas Safe engineer can register a boiler with the Gas Safe Register. This means that you won’t be able to register it yourself. If you need to do this, you should contact the individual or company that installed your appliance initially and ask them to do it on your behalf.
In some instances, the company you used to install the boiler may no longer be running. You should instead contact another similar company within your area and provide them with all the information they need, as well as the details of the previous company.
