Vitocharge VX3 PV power storage unit

Vitocharge VX3 optimises power consumption and reduces energy costs

Given the different power consumption levels in detached and two-family houses, a system that is simple to plan, with flexible storage unit sizes, is needed. The compact Vitocharge VX3 photovoltaic energy storage system was designed for precisely this purpose.

Three different power classes (single-phase and three-phase) are available to ensure that the Vitocharge VX3 is perfectly matched to PV system outputs of up to 12 kWp. With up to three batteries (5 kWh each), an inverter can provide a maximum usable storage capacity of 15 kWh. With the new cascade function, storage capacities of up to 75 kWh are also possible. Thanks to its modular design, installation is particularly easy and can be carried out by one person.

Your energy system from a single source

The modular Vitocharge VX3 electricity storage system is at the heart of sophisticated energy solutions for heating, electricity, and mobility. The energy from the photovoltaic system is absorbed by the electricity storage unit and consumed directly, for example by the Vitocal heat pump. Any surplus energy charges the Vitocharge VX3 batteries – the energy is not lost and is available for later use. This enables maximum independence from external energy suppliers. A charging station is a useful addition to the system. It allows you to conveniently charge your electric car with electricity generated on your own roof.

More about the ViCare app

Vitocharge VX3 – one product for many applications

The hybrid inverter has an AC connection: 4.6 kVA/1-phase as well as 6.0 and 8.0 kVA/3-phase DC connection: 2 x PV input with MPP tracker, 1 x multifunctional for battery or additional PV string with MPP tracker. The Vitocharge VX3 energy storage system is available in three configurations: with 2, 4 and 6 batteries of 2.5 kWh each. Depending on the configuration, either 5, 10 or 15 kWh storage capacity can be used. A casing in a timeless design can accommodate 2 battery modules. Whether wall mounted or floorstanding, the Vitocharge VX3 is versatile in installation and fits seamlessly into any home thanks to its compact construction.

Energy revenue instead of energy costs

With the Vitocharge VX3 PV power storage system, you can rely on state-of-the-art technology and high efficiency thanks to intelligent optimization software. The proven lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for a long operating life and meet the highest safety standards. That is why Viessmann offers a 10-year product warranty for connectivity and a 10-year replacement value warranty for the battery cells.

Investing in the future

The system can also be expanded if your electricity requirements change. And the standardized EEBUS communication interface allows variable and intelligent integration into a wide variety of energy systems to further increase energy efficiency. Take advantage of the full potential of battery storage in conjunction with a dynamic tariff to further reduce your costs. This means you can still benefit even when the sun isn't shining.

The new generation of powerful gateways combines intelligent functionality and high flexibility for greater efficiency in the control, regulation, and monitoring of third-party photovoltaic systems up to a maximum of 30 kWp. With the Solar-Log Base Vi Gateway, it is possible, for example, to integrate existing third-party photovoltaic systems into Viessmann One Base during modernization. It is also possible to partially electrify existing fossil fuel heat generators, for example with an electric heating element. This allows surplus PV electricity to be smartly converted into heat.

The BackupBox, available as an add-on, lets you pick specific appliances (lights, fridge, network gear) that'll keep getting power even if the grid goes down.

In the event of a power outage, the battery supplies the appliances in the house and is simultaneously recharged by the PV system. In this way, long periods without access to the public grid can be overcome.

In modern heating systems, heat and electricity are increasingly converging. In light of this, we are proud to introduce a new product: our Vitocharge VX3 – the latest generation of energy storage systems. Discover why and how the future is electrifying us, how heating systems and power generation are evolving together, and most importantly, what makes our new energy storage system so special.

Sample applications with the Vitocharge VX3

Vitocharge VX3 with Vitovolt and Vitovalor

A high level of self-consumption and self-sufficiency can be achieved by combining the Vitovolt with the Vitocharge VX3 and the Vitovalor. In this configuration, the photovoltaic system supplies most of the electricity in the summer, while the fuel cell plays a greater role in power generation in the winter. This means that the electricity needed to power a home and electric vehicle is assured all year round.

Another particularly effective way to save energy is by enabling interaction between a heat pump, photovoltaics and the Vitocharge. This involves the electrical components in the heat pump being operated with self-generated power. In this way, the costs for the drive power are completely eliminated and the heat pump operates extremely economically. The conventional –– and more expensive –– scenario would be to supply the heat pump with electricity from the public grid. In addition to the economic advantage of self-generated power, the environment also benefits from this interaction. Because the electricity from your own roof is guaranteed to be environmentally responsible.

Further special features

By maintaining a capacity reserve and intelligently regulating the depth of discharge, the usable storage capacity of the Vitocharge VX3 – in contrast to conventional capacity utilisation – can be kept constant and only drops at the very end of its service life. In this way, the customer has access to a high level of performance from the energy storage system from day one, which will consistently supply electrical consumers in the home for years to come.

The integrated function to maximise yields reduces losses due to (partial) shading of the PV system to a minimum. This is standard with every Vitocharge VX3 and optimises the PV system for the highest possible yields at all times through the intelligent software. The output of the individual PV strings is analysed at regular intervals and the maximum output of the system is adjusted accordingly.

The ViCare app provides users of Viessmann electrical and thermo-electrical energy systems with a transparent application for energy management. In addition to controlling the components, it combines online-connected devices into a resource-saving and energy-efficient overall system. Users benefit from, for example:

  • Optimized self-consumption
  • Forecast-based charging of the electricity storage unit
  • Intelligent charging modes for the charging station for electric cars

All this is made possible by Viessmann One Base: the platform seamlessly connects the Vitocharge VX3 with the entire Viessmann energy system – from the Vitovolt PV system and the Vitocal heat pump to the charging station for your electric car. The result is a perfectly coordinated system network from a single source.

Vitocharge VX3 with the GridBox and ViCare

Vitocharge VX3 can also be integrated into energy management systems and home automation applications via the integrated EEBUS and KNX communication interface (optional gateway required). This allows, for example, the energy flows of the Vitocharge VX3 (from type B onwards) and other system components to be visualized and the operating mode to be optimized.

EEBUS interface

The ViGuide app enables quick and error-free commissioning of Vitocharge VX3. The app automatically establishes a direct connection via the integrated WiFi access point and guides the specialist partner through the setup process. For maximum ease of use, end customers can have their installation company activate the Vitocharge VX3 via the internet. They then no longer need to worry about operating their electricity storage system – the specialist partner (both the heating specialist and the electrical specialist) can monitor the system's proper functioning at all times via ViGuide and can respond quickly to any irregularities if necessary.
